Spooky Halloween Treats

I am so fascinated by the way people use food to create art. There are so many Halloween treats that I want to share. I hope I'll get a chance to make some of these cool treats.

Directions
PREPARE cookies as directed on package. Cool completely.

COLOR white frosting as desired (one color can be used or divide frosting and have several colors. One container of frosting will be enough to make all 12).

SPOON 1 heaping tablespoon of frosting in center of 12 cookies. Top each with remaining 12 cookies. To make monster hair on top of cookie, fill pastry bag or small plastic food storage bag fitted with star tip with frosting. Squeeze bag lightly to pipe hair. Position eyes onto front of hair. Use frosting to adhere mini morsels to eyes for pupils. Insert almonds in filling for teeth. Decorate monsters as desired with additional sprinkles or licorice for an extra scary monster!
Remember to follow baking instructions before consuming.
Graveyard Cake
Prep time: 30 minutes
Cook time: 28 minutes
Resurrect some Halloween fun with this haunting recipe for Graveyard Cake.

With creepy crawly bugs and frightfully delicious graves set upon a frosted final resting place, this devilishly moist cake will be the "life" of the party.

So spooktacular, this sweet cemetery will have everyone digging for more!
What you need
  • 1 pkg. (18.25 oz.) of devil's food or yellow cake mix
  • 1 container (16 oz.) of prepared vanilla frosting
  • 12 NESTLÉ CRUNCH Fun-Size Candy Bars
  • 1 small tube white decorator icing
  • 3 NESTLÉ BUTTERFINGER Fun-Size Candy Bars, chopped
  • 1 bag (6.5 oz.) WONKA SLUGGLES Gummies candy (bug shapes) or other gummy candies

How to do it
PREPARE cake mix according to package directions using one 13 x 9-inch baking pan. Cool completely in pan. Invert cake onto serving platter. Frost cake, using a little more frosting than usual on top ("tombstones" will be pushed into frosting).

WRITE spooky words such as "RIP" or "BOO" on Crunch bars using tube icing. Let sit for a few minutes to dry.

PRESS Crunch bars into cake to create "tombstones". Sprinkle chopped Butterfinger bars next to tombstones to create "dirt". Creatively place gummy bugs over top of cake.

Frankenstein's Jell-o Monster

When made of Jell-O, this creature isn't such a frightful fellow. He is, however, a wee bit jiggly -- and sure to make your children giggly. (Party tip: Prepare steps 1 through 3 ahead of time and let the guests do steps 4 and 5 at the party before they eat the monsters.)
Ingredients
  • Black and red 3-D paint and brushes (scars and mouths); we used Scribbles
  • and Tulip Slick brands
  • Ceramic plate
  • 3-ounce box of Jell-O lime gelatin (makes 2 monsters)
  • 9-or 10-ounce, 4-inch-tall clear plastic cup
  • Table knife or spoon
  • 2 Maraschino cherries (eyes)
  • Double-sided tape
  • 2 Rolos (neck bolts)
  • Crushed Oreos (enough for hair)

Instructions
  1. Frankenstein's Jell-O Monster - Step 1 Paint scars and mouths on a ceramic plate as shown (squiggly mouths and "stitches" are covering a plate). Let them air-dry over night.
  2. Prepare the gelatin according to the package directions. Pour slightly cooled gelatin into the cup, stopping 1/2 inch from the top.
  3. Refrigerate until the gelatin is partially gelled, then remove the cup from the refrigerator and use a table knife or spoon handle to push 2 cherry eyes into the gelatin. Refrigerate again until the gelatin is completely set.
  4. Use double-sided tape to attach the neck bolts. Peel the scars and mouths off the plate and place them on the cup (they'll adhere like Colorforms). If it's difficult to peel the shapes off the plate, stick the plate in the refrigerator for at least 10 minutes, and they should come off easily. Variation: it may not look as cool as the paint, but kids can also use a permanent marker to draw the face on.
  5. Cover the top of the gelatin with crushed Oreos hair. Don't wait too long to gobble up the monsters, or the hair will get soggy.
